Koraput: Residents of at least five villages under Gunupur forest range in
Rayagada district are living in fear as a lone tusker is on the rampage,
destroying agricultural land, damaging houses and knocking down electric
poles.
The elephant’s aggressive behaviour is believed to have intensified after
the tragic death of a female elephant, electrocuted earlier this week.
On Wednesday night, it destroyed a tube-well and an electric pole and
damaged acres of cotton cultivation. The day after, it destroyed
agricultural fields and knocked down an electric pole in Seema village,
resulting in power outages in Malapadar and Jhumpapur villages.
“We are frightened as the tusker has become aggressive and enters the
fields after sunset. We fear stepping outside in the evening,” said a
resident of Seema village.
Forest officials are closely monitoring the elephant’s movements and have
advised villagers not to provoke the animal.
