A juvenile female wild elephant was found dead at a riverside in Dhonimudi
Estate in Manambolly forest range, in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) on
Tuesday morning.
Forest department officials said the elephant had likely fallen down a 15m
deep slope of the private pocket shola forest. "It could have suffered a
pulmonary-cardiac failure and shock, resulting in its death," said a
forester.
Meanwhile, the preliminary autopsy report revealed that the elephant aged
about seven years, had died 36 to 48 hours before its carcass was found.
Scratch injuries and mild lacerated wounds were found on its left lateral
abdominal region, knee joints, and hind limbs.
"The pachyderm's heart and kidneys were severely congested, and
haemorrhagic spots were noticed in its lungs," said Dr A Sukumar, forest
veterinary officer, Coimbatore forest division, who conducted the autopsy.
Dr E Vijayaraghavan, assistant surgeon, ATR, assisted him in conducting the
autopsy. Samples of the elephant's internal organs were sent for
histopathological examination to determine if it was suffering from any
illness.
Forest officials removed the elephant's tushes and later buried the carcass
in the forest.
