JAKARTA: A six-month-old male Sumatran elephant calf has been found dead in
Sri Mulya village of Indonesia's Aceh province, according to the Aceh
Natural Resources Conservation Agency on Monday.
The agency's head Agus Arianto said the carcass of the calf was found with
wounds on its left hind leg on Friday on the border between a forest area
and community plantations. "It is suspected that the wounds were caused by
being hit by a male elephant's tusk, or due to another elephant trying to
wake up the calf," added Arianto.
The medical team has taken samples of the calf to be examined in the
laboratory to determine the cause of death.
Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) are protected mammals. The
International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2021 upgraded the
conservation status of the species from endangered to its Red List as the
elephant population has declined by at least 80 percent since the past
three generations.
