Krishnagiri: A wild elephant fell into a 10-foot-deep pond in a reserve
forest area near Denkanikottai in Krishnagiri district on Thursday. Forest
officials later rescued the animal using an earthmover.

A forest officer said several herds of elephants were wandering in Aiyur
reserve forest. A 35-year-old male elephant which had ventured into
Moorkankarai village in search of water, ended up falling into a
10-foot-deep pond located in an agricultural land while trying to drink
from it.

"The elephant couldn't climb out of the pond," said K Poovarasan, a
villager who noticed the elephant. Villagers alerted Denkanikottai forest
officials after which a team including anti-poaching guards rushed to the
spot. They got an earthmover and created a path to help the elephant climb
out of the pond.

Once the elephant made it out, it walked around the area for a while before
making its way back into the forest. Forest officials followed it for a
while to ensure that it went back deep into the woods.
