In a bid to address the increasing human-elephant conflict (HEC) in Jorhat
district, over 200 villagers from Haatisal and Sagunpara have been trained
in the installation, operation, and management of solar-powered fences. The
initiative aims to help these villagers coexist with wild elephants that
frequently roam the region.

The training sessions, held on 24th and 25th September, were organised by
Aaranyak, a leading biodiversity conservation organisation in the region,
in partnership with the British Asian Trust and with the support of the
Darwin Initiative. These sessions are part of a larger plan to install a
low-cost, single-strand solar-powered fence in these villages in October,
providing a sustainable solution to mitigate human-elephant conflicts.

Anjan Baruah, an expert in solar fence management from Aaranyak, led the
training, with village heads Dulal Saikia of Haatisal and Deepamoni
Hazarika of Bezorsiga in attendance. The programmes were coordinated by
Aaranyak official Niranjan Bhuyan, with support from Rubul Tanti, Ananta
Dutta, Chiranjib Kalita, and Lakhinath Taid, who are all part of Aaranyak’s
team.

Village Champions of Aaranyak, including Makhan Kalita, Sabita Mala, and
Sunil Taid, also played a key role in organising the training programmes.
The training is seen as a crucial step towards reducing the rising tensions
between humans and elephants in the area, promoting peaceful coexistence
through innovative solutions.

Aaranyak has been instrumental in facilitating the installation of
solar-powered fences in other HEC-affected regions of Assam and the Garo
Hills of Meghalaya, helping communities coexist with wild elephants while
protecting their lives and livelihoods.
