The elephant that reportedly killed four people and injured three others in
just four days in villages under the Baripada forest division in the
Mayurbhanj district has finally been tranquilised. The forest team on the
trail of the elephant, led by Baripada DFO Uma Mahesh, shot it with a
tranquiliser dart and captured it late Thursday night.
The pachyderm separated from its herd had strayed into Odisha from West
Bengal, forest officials revealed. The wild elephant had been on a killing
spree and killed four persons including two women in the past four days.
Meanwhile, three persons are currently battling for their lives at Baripada
PRM Medical College and Hospital after being attacked by the elephant.
Besides, it destroyed several houses and acres of standing crops in several
villages.
After four days, the forest department has finally managed to tranquilize
it and plans to relocate it to a safer place and release it into the wild.
“Even after tranquilising the elephant, it managed to escape for around
1-2km into the forest. It took us around one hour to trace it as it was
slowly coming out of sedation. It was a challenge for us. But, we managed
to tranquilise it without any injury or attack,” informed Baripada DFO Uma
Mahesh.
“Our veterinary doctors, biologists, ACF and other personnel, everyone has
done a commendable job. So, I really thank the whole team whole-heartedly
for helping us in relocating the elephant without causing any harm to it,”
he added.
