Three persons have been arrested and remanded for the poaching of a tusker,
whose carcass was found near Emanur in Pennagaram forest range earlier this
month.
The accused have been identified as S. Vijay Kumar, 23, of Kongarapatti in
Pennagaram; R. Dinesh, 26, of Govindapadi in Karnataka and V. Govindaraju,
54, of Kongarapatti in Pennagaram.
The carcass of the elephant aged between 7 years and 10 years was found in
a partially burnt state with its trunk missing, in Emanur forests in
Pennagaram forest range on March 1. The incident was regarded as the first
such in the forest range.
According to the Forest Department, with the arrests of the accused, it was
revealed that the poaching was carried out on February 27 in Godubavi range
of Emanur bear, Neruppur section of Penngaram forest range. Two tusks were
also recovered from Karaikal village in Salem.
The accused were booked under the various sections of the Wildlife
Protection Act for elephant poaching by gun shot, removal of tusks,
possession of the tusks and their trade.
Five teams were formed by the District Forest Officer K. Rajangam in its
wake.
A search is on for three more accused who are absconding.
