Vizianagaram: In yet another incident of man-animal conflict in Andhra
Pradesh, a 74-year-old farmer was trampled to death by a herd of elephants
near Peda Bondapalli village, under Parvathipuram rural police station
limits in Manyam district, on Thursday evening. The deceased was identified
as Devabattula Yacoob. Despite efforts by elephant trackers to rescue him,
he succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital.
Yacoob is the 12th person to be killed by elephants in Parvathipuram Manyam
region in the past one decade. The fresh incident has instilled fear in
Peda Bondapalli and surrounding villages. Locals said a herd of seven
elephants, including a calf, has been roaming Peda Bondapalli and nearby
areas for the past few days.
Local police station sub-inspector V Santhoshi said Yacoob was
hearing-impaired and did not hear the elephants while removing weeds in his
paddy field. Elephants are usually very protective about newborns in the
herd, and may have attacked him due to that reason, she added.
Parvathipuram Manyam DFO GAP Prasuna, local MLA Bonela Vijayachandra and
others visited the bereaved family on Friday and handed over a cheque of 10
lakh to his family.
