Assam: Moving train mows down wild elephant in Lakhimpur Farhana Ahmed, Northeast Now April 11, 2021 A wild elephant was mowed down by a moving train in the Kadam area of Assam’s Lakhimpur district. The incident took place on Saturday around 9:30 pm when a herd of wild elephants was crossing the railway tracks between Baghjan and Sarkarijan. The herd of wild elephants was moving from Dullung Reserve Forest under Pathalipam Forest Beat towards the hills of Arunachal Pradesh. One of the wild elephants was killed when a freight train, which was coming from Silapathar Railway Station in Dhemaji district towards New Bongaigaon, hit the animal. The incident was so severe that the dead pachyderm got stuck under the train making it unmoveable. Forest guards from Pathalipam Forest Beat and personnel from Bogeenadi Police Station pulled out the dead wild elephant from the train after a two-hour-long effort. Railway traffic was affected for two hours on the Rangiya-Murkongchelek and North Lakhimpur-Tinsukia route due to the incident. Elephants from Dullung Reserve Forest under Lakhimpur Forest Division have been entering human habitats on regular basis and on many occasions become victims of man-elephant conflict. On February 7, one 35-year-old Ratul Saikia of Kuhiyarbari village under Bogeenadi Police Station in Lakhimpur district was trampled to death by a strayed wild elephant after coming out of Dullung Reserve Forest. Recently, another wild elephant created havoc in Bogeenadi and its nearby areas from March 28 onwards as it strayed out from its herd in Kawoimari Chapori and could not return to Dullung Reserve Forest due to traffic on NH15.
