Hassan: A woman, 70, died in a wild elephant attack in Belur's Kanaguppe on
Thursday. Dyavamma was attacked and killed by a wild elephant in the
morning while she was searching for her cattle, according to officials. Her
body was later found in the bush. The villagers and family members
expressed their anger over the lack of measures to control the wild
elephant menace.
Upon receiving the news, Arehalli police and forest department officials
rushed to the scene. Meanwhile, villagers and family members staged a flash
protest, accusing the forest department of failing to find a solution to
the problem of wild elephant attacks. People were suffering due to the
negligence of the state govt and the department. Although several people
lost their lives, the authorities failed to take measures, the villagers
alleged.
The protesters demanded the forest minister and higher officials visit the
site and refused to perform final rites. The protesters criticised the
authorities for making false promises. Deputy conservator of forests
Saurabh Kumar said the department was taking necessary measures to control
the wild animals entering the human habitat.
