Villagers from Deulwadi in Ajara tehsil reported witnessing an elephant on
the rampage and tossing a car 300ft away in the intervening night of
Thursday and Friday.
The animal damaged the parked car belonging to a resident of Latgaon Phata.
In addition to the damage caused to the vehicle, the elephant also
reportedly damaged crops. Both the car owner and the farmers will have to
bear the financial brunt of the damage. The incident has caused some panic
and fear among the villagers.
Hanmant Sawant, whose vehicle was damaged, told TOI, "Everyone was asleep
at the time of the incident. We were woken up by a loud trumpet sound. When
I went to the window, the elephant was right outside my house and was
toying around with my recently purchased car."
He added, "The elephant started dragging the car with his trunk and threw
it into the adjacent paddy fields, nearly 300 feet away."
Sawant called for action from the forest department, citing that almost
every other week there was crop damage due to the elephants.
