A baby elephant, suspected to have separated from the herd, was spotted at
Kalane village in Maharashtra which shares borders with Ibrampur, Pernem,
in Goa.

The calf has been causing loss to horticultural and other crops for the
past two days. Rajendra Desai from Kalane suffered losses to arecanut,
coconut palms.

It is suspected that there are six elephants in Dodamarg taluka.

Elephants causes huge losses to agro-horticultural crops with very little
relief in the way of compensation. Kishor Jangale, a forest range official
of Khadpade, said a team has started patrolling the area. “We are trying
our best to bring the young elephant closer to its herd,” he said.

People of Ibrampur have requested Goa govt to maintain vigil so that their
crops are not destroyed. A herd of elephants that migrated from Karnataka
to the Tillari region of Maharashtra in 2008 were spotted in the villages
of Pernem and Bicholim talukas.

In 2008, Rajendra Bhagat, a forest guard, and in 2013, Revora local
Yeshwant Phadte, were killed in a man-animal conflict.
