A 65-year-old man was trampled to death by a herd of 18 elephants at
Tilaiya village under Jageshwar Police station limits of Gomia block in
Bokaro district on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Laharu Mahto.

Locals said the herd of elephants emerged from the nearby Jageshwar forest
and attacked Mahto, who visited the area to collect mahua fruit at around 5
am. Others who were collecting mahua along with Mahto managed to flee.

Upon receiving information about the attack, Tilaiya villagers gathered at
the site. Forest department and Jageshwar police station team, led by
in-charge Abhinash Kumar, arrived, and took Mahto’s body into custody and
sent it for postmortem.

Local divisional forest officer (DFO) Rajneesh Kumar said the deceased’s
wife Murali Devi has been given an immediate compensation of Rs 25,000. “As
per the govt’s provision, the families of those who die due to elephant
attacks are entitled to a compensation of Rs 4 lakh. The remaining amount
will be disbursed after post-mortem and necessary documentation,” Kumar
told TOI.

Forest officials said the herd of elephants has been camping in the area
since earlier this year and had killed three people in Gomia in February.
