Elephant calf found dead in Korba mud pit Times of India October 1, 2023 An elephant calf was found dead in a marshland in Korba district of Chhattisgarh on Saturday morning. From preliminary probe, foresters suspect that the calf got stuck in the swamp and was inadvertently trampled to death by the rest of the herd in an attempt to pull it out. Villagers saw the carcass in the morning and alerted the forest department. A team went to the spot, realized it was long dead, and retrieved the carcass for autopsy. A forest official said that the calf, aged around six months, was from a herd of 40 elephants that has been frequenting the region for the past few days. The jumbos were passing by Saliyabhata village in Katghora forest region when the calf got stuck in the mud in a pond. It perhaps struggled to get out and was injured when the other elephants tried to help it. The herd might have moved on, seeing no hope.
