The 60-km long road stretch from Ormanjhi in Ranchi to Jainamore in Bokaro,
passing through two valleys and preserved natural forest in Ramgarh
district, will have as many as five passages, which include underpasses and
flyovers for the safe movement of elephants, officials said.
The expressway passes through an elephant corridor in forests in Ramgarh
district, which extends to neighbouring West Bengal.
The two-lane state highway from Ormanjhi (Ranchi) to Gola has been
converted into a four-lane expressway under Indian govt's Bharatmala
project. The 60-km long under-construction Bharatmala expressway,
connecting the Ranchi-Patna national highway in Ormanjhi and the
Ramgarh-Bokaro national highway in Gola of Ramgarh district, will have five
wildlife crossings. These include three underpasses and one flyover for
hassle-free roaming of wildlife, especially elephants.
Nitish Kumar, divisional forest officer, on Saturday told TOI that the
design of underpasses and the flyover meant for wild animals has been
approved after several rounds of discussions with the National Highway
Authority of India Limited (NHAI) officials.
According to the project plan, the estimated cost of the 60-km long
expressway is Rs 2,224 crore.
"The size of the crossing way, especially for elephants, was a key
consideration as the under-construction expressway passes through an
elephant corridor. For the safety and conservation of wildlife, it has been
made mandatory to build passages in expressways," he said.
