The residents living along the border between Meghalaya and Assam,
particularly in the Sekurberia region, which lies within the jurisdiction
of Hima Jirang, have been compelled to take shelter in protected areas to
shield themselves from wild elephants.
The pachyderms often venture onto farms and surrounding jungle to feed,
destroying crops, barns and even homes in the process.
One such incident occurred today at around 4pm when several wild elephants
were seen attempting to enter farmlands to feed on crops.
According to residents, during such times wild elephants often roam in
search of food, targeting crops on the hills and in the fields. As a
result, the people are forced to guard their crops night and day in order
to try and drive them away and protect their produce.
